Grande Prairie City Council begins its 2026 budget deliberations today, and residents are being told to brace for a tax increase.
City documents show a 5.78% increase is needed just to maintain the current level of services, and the policing budget referred to Council would push the total impact to 8.45%.
It’s a massive jump at a time when families are already struggling with rising costs in every part of their lives.
The City points to inflation, higher labour costs, and new facility expenses as reasons it can’t avoid raising taxes.
But instead of prioritizing spending, finding efficiencies, or refocusing on core responsibilities, the proposed plan leans heavily on taxpayers, and still leaves the City considering additional debt to finance major projects.
Residents deserve a City Hall that lives within its means just like they do.
