Grande Prairie experienced the highest year-over-year rent increase in Canada for March, with apartment rents rising by 14.1%. Despite this surge, the city remains one of the most affordable rental markets in the country. Among 25 mid-sized Canadian cities, Grande Prairie ranked seventh for the lowest average apartment rent at $1,424 per month. Other Alberta cities, including Medicine Hat and Red Deer, also saw significant increases while still remaining relatively affordable. It was announced that a 19-bed transition unit is opening at the QEII Ambulatory Care Centre to ease pressure on the local hospital system. These beds, known as Alternate Level of Care (ALC) beds, will support patients who no longer need acute care but aren't yet ready to return home or are waiting for long-term care placement. Staffed by nurses, aides, and doctors, the unit will provide short-term care to help patients recover more fully. Alberta Health Services hopes this will free up space at the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital, especially during respiratory illness season. The beds are expected to be available by late April.
- With spring thaw revealing more debris, the Grande Prairie Police Service’s Mobile Outreach Team has been ramping up needle mitigation efforts. The team is conducting regular sweeps in high-traffic areas like parks and downtown. A dedicated Needle Mitigation Worker, funded by a provincial grant, supports the team by responding to public concerns and working with local businesses to keep public spaces safe. This worker is available weekdays from 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm, while the broader team operates daily from 6:00 am to midnight. Residents can report concerns or request cleanups by dialling 311.
