Grande Prairie Minute - Your weekly one-minute summary of Grande Prairie politics

This Week In Grande Prairie:

  • This afternoon, at 2:00 pm, there will be an in-camera meeting of City Council, followed by a public meeting of City Council at 3:00 pm. During the public meeting, Council will appoint Kim Pinnock as the Returning Officer for the 2025 Municipal Election, as well as appoint Robin Mo and John Rudyk to the Combative Sports Commission. The agenda also includes a discussion about a Gift Agreement with Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities for the donation of an inclusive playground in Lion's Park called the “Jumpstart Inclusive Playground.”

  • The Grande Prairie and District Chamber of Commerce says it is not overly concerned about potential 25% US tariffs, viewing it as an opportunity to strengthen local and national trade. While the Chamber hopes for a resolution, Board Chair Jon Anderson stressed the importance of diversifying business relationships beyond a single trading partner. He notes that Alberta and the Peace region continue to promote their attractiveness for business. Anderson acknowledged potential challenges if trade barriers arise but emphasized regional collaboration across provinces. The Chamber is also conducting a survey to assess the tariff's impact on local businesses, which can be taken here.

  • The City is urging residents to report potholes as the freeze-thaw cycle has caused road damage. Snow-clearing crews have been actively addressing potholes and managing snow piles from residential areas and parking lots. They are also working to smooth high-traffic roads through spot blading and maintaining water runoff systems. Residents can report problematic areas via the City's online services to assist crews in ensuring safe road conditions during the winter months.

Last Week In Grande Prairie:

  • The Grande Prairie RCMP summarized the work of its four "plainclothes" units - the General Investigation Section (GIS), Special Investigations Unit (SIU), Crime Reduction Unit (CRU), and Drug Section. The units worked together on over 2,000 investigations. GIS supported 269 investigations, handling serious and sensitive cases, while SIU progressed 1,176 investigations related to sexual and intimate partner violence. The Drug Section conducted 176 investigations, seizing drugs and firearms, resulting in 69 charges and 22 arrests. Meanwhile, the CRU focused on high-risk offenders, assisting in 646 investigations, charging 40 individuals, recovering 55 stolen vehicles, and seizing drugs and firearms.

  • The City has introduced an online tool for residents to report collisions, in collaboration with Accident Support Services International Ltd. The tool allows users to complete 85% of the collision report online, reducing wait times at the Collision Reporting Centre (CRC). Since its launch, the program has already helped shorten lines. After submitting the report online, residents must visit the CRC within 24 hours to verify and finalize it. This initiative aims to make the reporting process less stressful for drivers involved in collisions.

  • City Manager Shane Bourke shared plans for the 2025 Municipal Election, including ensuring regular services continue during the election period. He emphasized that the election is part of a four-year cycle, and while extra work is involved, services like road maintenance and park upkeep will remain unaffected. Administration is already organizing orientation sessions for new candidates and providing them with resources to understand the role of a City Councillor. After the election, focus will shift to ensuring newly elected Councillors are properly oriented, with mandatory sessions required by the Province. The new Council will set a budget by the end of the year and begin strategic planning in early 2026.
