Grande Prairie Minute - Your weekly one-minute summary of Grande Prairie politics

📅 This Week In Grande Prairie: 📅

  • The Financial and Administrative Services Committee, the Investment and Strategy Committee, and the Public and Protective Services Committee meetings, scheduled for Tuesday morning, have all been cancelled.

  • The Council Committee of the Whole will meet on Tuesday at 9:30 am. The Committee will hear an advocacy update outlining ongoing efforts by the City of Grande Prairie to address electricity distribution disparities, including correspondence with the provincial Minister and coordination with regional municipalities on next steps. Work is also underway to develop a recommendation to the province on the 911 levy to support sustainable emergency services funding. Ahead of the 2026 provincial budget, the City submitted a letter highlighting priorities such as electricity distribution reform, funding for Maskwa Medical Centre, expanded trades training, additional courthouse space, and the Hwy 40X Connector. Further discussion on 2026 advocacy priorities is expected after Council’s strategic planning in the first quarter of the year.

  • Some veterans in Grande Prairie are calling for a replacement of the cenotaph in Jubilee Park, arguing that the current monument does not adequately reflect Canadian Armed Forces missions from the past several decades. They say more recent deployments, including Afghanistan and Bosnia, are only minimally acknowledged, which they feel fails to properly honour those who served and died. Updating the existing structure is seen as impractical, as changes would require damaging the original stonework. As a result, veterans are exploring the option of installing a new granite monument with a similar design that would still respect the original cenotaph, which was dedicated in 1958. One proposal would place the new monument near the current site, possibly behind the existing circular walkway. City Council has asked Administration to examine options to replace or enhance the cenotaph, including potential alternative locations, as part of a future report.

  • In a recent interview with Alberta Primetime host Michael Higgins, Mayor Jackie Clayton discussed several major priorities shaping the city’s future, including health care, public safety, and municipal finances. A newly launched medical training program will bring dozens of medical students to the region each year, an effort the City sees as critical to attracting and retaining doctors by training them locally. The City has also made progress recruiting new specialists and supporting their integration into the community through targeted engagement and ambassador initiatives. On the financial side, Council approved a 2026 budget that includes a tax increase driven largely by rising operating costs and the accelerated transition to a new municipal police service. The Grande Prairie Police Service is ahead of schedule and is expected to assume full policing responsibility later this year, marking a major shift away from the RCMP. Looking ahead, the Mayor emphasized the need for clearer communication with residents and stronger collaboration with provincial and federal governments to keep services affordable and effective.

  • The Art Gallery of Grande Prairie will be closed until October while renovations are completed at the Montrose Cultural Centre. During the closure, exhibitions and learning programs will be relocated to the Grande Prairie Museum, with education staff continuing to offer youth programming both onsite and through outreach across the city and surrounding community. Library staff will also use the renovation period to install a new database system aimed at improving public access and engagement with the gallery’s collections.
