📅 This Week In Grande Prairie: 📅

  • Happy New Year! As 2026 gets underway, Common Sense Grande Prairie is ready to make this the year that common sense takes center stage in our city. Your support and engagement make it possible for us to push for smarter decisions, lower taxes, and greater accountability at City Hall. This year, we’ll continue speaking up for practical solutions that benefit all residents and ensure our city’s leaders are focused on the priorities that matter most. Wishing you and your family a happy, healthy, and successful year ahead!

  • Today, at 3:00 pm, there will be a City Council meeting. On the agenda is a public hearing to gather feedback on a proposed land use bylaw amendment. The amendment would rezone a vacant 0.6-hectare parcel in the Northridge area from Commercial Transition to a Direct Control district to allow a contractor business with outdoor storage. City Administration says the change aligns with the area structure plan, fits surrounding land uses, and is not expected to create environmental, economic, or social impacts, with no public objections received so far.

  • Council will also address two items that arose from previous Committee meetings. The first is adoption of the Grander Winter Strategy, which aims to position winter as a defining strength rather than a challenge for Grande Prairie. It is built around three goals: promoting a positive winter identity, expanding accessible winter programming and cultural experiences, and ensuring supportive infrastructure, mobility, and safety systems. The strategy is intended to be a living document that guides long-term winter planning and adapts to future Council priorities.

  • The second item is a proposed transit public awareness campaign and the addition of an annual free transit day to recognize Canadian Transit Operator and Worker Appreciation Day on March 18th. A report notes that transit ridership in Grande Prairie has grown in recent years due to service improvements, promotional initiatives, and expanded On-Demand options, prompting Administration to explore more coordinated marketing and outreach. The strategy focuses on clear, targeted messaging to different user groups and highlights transit’s role in accessibility, affordability, economic activity, and environmental goals. Proposed efforts include digital outreach, community engagement, partnerships with local businesses, and print and outdoor advertising, supported by tracking ridership and public sentiment.

  • The Grande Prairie Spirit Tree fundraiser raised a record-breaking $150,000 during the 2025 holiday season, doubling the previous high of $75,000 set in 2018. The fundraiser was made possible through a partnership between the Spirit Tree Society and a local restaurant, where the tree was displayed after returning to its original location. First launched in 2017, the tree has moved between several locations over the years before coming back this season. Organizers said the strong donation total reflects the generosity and compassion of the Peace Region community. All funds raised will go directly to local families in need, as operating and maintenance costs were fully covered by sponsors.
