📅 This Week In Grande Prairie: 📅
-
There are no Council or Committee meetings this week, on account of the Christmas holidays. The next meeting at City Hall will take place on January 5th, 2026.
- Residential snow clearing in Grande Prairie has been delayed to Monday, December 29th, due to extreme cold and weather conditions, with City crews now focusing on priority roads first. The second round of residential snow removal, originally scheduled for today, will follow a full two-week rotation using the standard A and B week schedule once it begins. City and contracted crews continue to maintain Priority 1, 2, and 3 roads, including main arterials, transit routes, and emergency access, performing plowing, sanding, and snow removal. Winter parking bans remain in effect on Priority 1 and 2 roads from 7:00 am to 9:00 pm, Monday to Friday, to help operations run smoothly. Updates will be shared online at the City's website and via City communication channels.

The City of Grande Prairie is offering Arts & Culture Festival Funding to support community-based, year-round organizations hosting festivals. Grants are available to both existing and new festival applications, but funding is supplemental and cannot exceed 50% of the festival budget or $14,000 per grant. Applicants must provide a detailed budget, current financial statement, and list of board members, and preference is given to groups that collaborate with other organizations. Eligible organizations should have been operating for at least three years, though newer groups may apply under an existing non-profit. Festivals must be open to the public, feature diverse activities or performances, and be publicly promoted locally and regionally. Applications are being accepted until January 1st, 2026.

Northwestern Polytechnic (NWP) has announced a major investment to establish a new Skilled Trades Training Centre in Grande Prairie, just weeks after confirming the closure of its Fairview campus. The Polytechnic has purchased the former Hansen Ford building, a 30,000-square-foot facility in the city’s industrial core and is already in the planning and design phase. NWP expects to begin accepting apprentices at the new centre for the fall 2026 term. Industry groups have welcomed the decision, noting ongoing shortages of skilled trades workers across construction, energy, transportation, and fabrication sectors. The new facility builds on recent investments in industry-replicated training environments aimed at producing job-ready graduates. The City described the project as a positive step for workforce development and local economic growth, helping align education pathways with regional labour market demand.
- The Grande Prairie RCMP has welcomed the first fully assembled frontline team, or Watch, of Grande Prairie Police Service (GPPS) officers, marking a key step in the City’s transition to a municipal police service. Watch 1 now includes two GPPS Sergeants, seven Constables, and four recruits, operating under the RCMP Watch Sergeant when on duty. Both GPPS and RCMP members are fully integrated, working together to maintain public safety in Grande Prairie. This milestone brings the total number of GPPS officers at the detachment to 38, following recent additions of recruits and experienced officers, while some RCMP officers were reassigned outside the city. The transition remains ongoing, with a formal Change of Command scheduled for October 21st, 2026, and the RCMP continues as the police of jurisdiction during this period.
