📅 This Week In Grande Prairie: 📅

  • On Tuesday, at 9:00 am, the Operational Services Committee will meet as part of Standing Committee Day. On the agenda is a review of the Boulevard Naturalization Pilot Program. Running from 2023 to 2025, the pilot tested naturalizing boulevards at three locations: 84 Avenue, 116 Avenue, and Resources Road. Ecologically, 84 Avenue performed best due to its proximity to a natural forest, which supported seed dispersal and biodiversity gains. The 116 Avenue site progressed more slowly, while Resources Road faced both ecological and social challenges, including slow vegetation establishment, weeds, and strong public opposition. Public engagement revealed that residents’ expectations for manicured boulevards remained high, particularly along visible corridors like Resources Road, where dissatisfaction persisted despite mowed buffers. Key lessons included the importance of adjacency to natural ecosystems, the need for mowed buffers along residential properties, early engagement to reduce resistance, and gradual implementation to encourage public acceptance. Administration recommends retaining naturalization at 84 Avenue and 116 Avenue while returning Resources Road to pre-pilot mowing practices.

  • Also on Tuesday, at 10:00 am, the Investment and Strategy Committee will meet. The agenda includes a review of the 2025 Grande Prairie Traditional Pow Wow, which celebrated the Beaver, Cree, and Métis cultures. The event was held from June 20th to 22nd at the Tara Centre, Evergreen Park, attracting an estimated 3,400 - 3,800 attendees from Alberta, British Columbia, and beyond. The three-day event featured Pipe Ceremonies, dances, Grande Entries, a Princess Pageant, Hand Games, and activities honouring Indigenous graduates, while also providing space for Indigenous artists. The event was organized by a volunteer committee of 22 people from the Grande Prairie Aboriginal Circle of Services. The 2026 Pow Wow is planned as a two-day event on June 27th and 28th at the same venue.

  • Council has approved a 4.34% property tax increase for 2026 (2.42% for municipal operations and 1.92% for the Grande Prairie Police Service), down from initial estimates of 5.78% for City operations and 2.66% for the police service. Mayor Jackie Clayton emphasized that Council aimed for a budget that balances affordability with quality services. The budget includes $28.5 million for roads and infrastructure, $194,000 for snow and ice removal, $100,000 to recruit healthcare workers, and $540,000 for parks and amenities projects.

  • Grande Prairie is launching a Youth Economic Empowerment Microgrant program to support residents aged 15 to 30 in reaching their goals. The program offers up to $750 per person to cover costs like safety training, professional certifications, workwear, and tools. Mayor Jackie Clayton says that supporting youth builds confidence, strengthens community connections, and helps future employees and business owners succeed. To be eligible, applicants must live, work, or attend school in Grande Prairie and identify an employment or education barrier impacting their progress.

  • The City of Grande Prairie has received $15,000 from the 2025 ATCO Community Energy Fund to conduct an energy audit at the Dave Barr Community Centre. The audit will review utility usage, building systems, and overall facility condition to identify areas of energy waste, potential cost savings, and opportunities for efficiency improvements. The findings will guide future upgrades, support long-term renewal, and strengthen the City’s eligibility for additional grants. Mayor Jackie Clayton says that the audit will help plan smart, future-focused investments to maintain the community centre as a thriving hub for local groups. The ATCO fund supports energy efficiency and sustainability projects for municipalities, schools, non-profits, and community organizations across Alberta.

🚨 This Week’s Action Item: 🚨

The tax increase - while still an increase - will be lower than originally proposed.

Do you appreciate Council's efforts, or should they have even more to further reduce the increase?
