There will be a City Council meeting today at 3:00 pm. The Grande Prairie Police Service (GPPS) is seeking City Council approval to enter a 10-year contract with Axon for its Records Management System (RMS) and to transfer $643,363.25 from capital funding to the 2026 operating budget. Axon was chosen over other systems due to its cloud-based platform, integration with existing Axon products (body-worn cameras, Tasers, in-car video, AI reporting), scalability for GPPS’s small IT team, and ability to meet the tight deployment timeline. The system consolidates multiple software applications, including online crime reporting and licensing. The total 10-year contract is projected at $9.54 million, with an annual first-year cost of $953,793.
- Budget deliberations will begin on Wednesday at 9:00 am. The City of Grande Prairie’s proposed 2026 budget plans $218.3 million in operating expenditures and $44.96 million in capital spending. The budget proposes a 5.78% municipal tax increase, with an additional 2.66% for the Grande Prairie Police Service, totalling 8.45%. Key drivers include salary and benefit increases, new facility operations like the Public Safety Communications Centre and Multisport Dome, rising capital costs, and the reversal of one-time reserve use from 2025. The capital plan prioritizes roads, stormwater infrastructure, and recreation/cultural facilities, with debt financing used for major projects and funding allocated for the GPPS transition to full policing authority by October 2026. The budget also highlights potential tax reduction options, which would reduce services in recreation, events, transit, and snow removal.

Grande Prairie residents have highlighted snow removal and road maintenance as top priorities in the city’s 2026 budget survey. Conducted from May to July, the survey allowed community members to suggest funding allocations, including $675,000 for projects they considered important. Snow-clearing and asphalt crack sealing received the most support, while other options included tree planting, transit improvements, events, and new playgrounds. Participants also emphasized broader priorities such as infrastructure upgrades and improved parks and green spaces.
-
Grande Prairie is expecting a budget surplus of approximately $3.45 million by the end of 2025, according to Chief Financial Officer Danielle Whiteway. The surplus is largely due to higher-than-expected revenues from development, advertising, and memberships, along with savings in RCMP costs during the transition to a municipal police force. Any decisions on how to use the surplus, whether for future projects or reserve funds, will be made by Council in the spring.
- Mayor Jackie Clayton has been acclaimed as Vice-Chair of the Alberta Mid-Sized Cities Mayors’ Caucus, which includes 24 Mayors from across the province. The caucus meets monthly online and twice yearly in person to share ideas, discuss challenges, and find efficiencies for mid-sized cities. Clayton highlighted that the executive, including herself and Chair Mayor Acker from Spruce Grove, represents the group when advocating to provincial and federal governments. Clayton expressed pride in serving on the executive again and emphasized the value of collaboration among Mayors to address issues directly affecting their communities. She described the caucus as an effective forum for exchanging solutions and supporting mid-sized cities’ unique needs.
