📅 This Week In Grande Prairie: 📅

  • Grande Prairie Enforcement Services reports that more than 800 speeding tickets were handed out in school zones from August 28th to September 12th, 2025. A total of 805 violations were recorded, with 109 issued by peace officers and the remainder by Automated Traffic Enforcement. School zones are in effect from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm on school days, while playground zones run from 7:30 am until one hour after sunset, with a maximum speed limit of 30 km/h in both. Enforcement Services is also monitoring parking behaviour around schools, with common violations including parking within five metres of a crosswalk or intersection, stopping or parking in “No Stopping” or “No Parking” zones, parking on sidewalks, and parking against the flow of traffic with left wheels to the curb.

  • Grande Prairie Police Service welcomed 10 new recruits on October 2nd, 2025, selected from over 300 applicants. The cohort includes individuals from a range of backgrounds, including former peace officers and tradespeople, with seven coming from the Grande Prairie and Peace River areas. Each recruit completed extensive evaluations, including physical testing, polygraph exams, background checks, and multiple interviews. Over the next six months, they will undergo training through Lethbridge Polytechnic’s Police Cadet program, learning skills such as firearms handling, community policing, crisis communication, Indigenous cultural awareness, and mental health first aid.

  • The Eastlink Centre pool will reopen to swimmers today, following a five-week period of annual maintenance. During the closure, crews performed a variety of updates and repairs, including cleaning and fixing the pools and hot tubs, upgrading filtration and chemical systems, refurbishing the sauna and steam rooms, refreshing change rooms with new paint and tile, and completing general lighting, flooring, and plumbing work throughout the aquatics area. While the lazy river and waterslide will remain closed for the rest of the year due to liner replacement, the facility has adjusted programming to accommodate users with fit swim times, aqua fit sessions, and low-impact dryland fitness classes.

  • During the ongoing Canada Post strike, the City of Grande Prairie is continuing to share public notices through its regular online and on-site channels to ensure residents stay informed. Planning notices, including rezoning, are posted on the City’s Public Notices webpage and with signs at the property site. Approved development permits requiring variances or discretionary uses are also displayed online and on-site, including appeal and contact information, while proposed permits for these uses are posted on the Public Notices section of the website.

  • The City is looking for a naming rights partner for its new multi-sports dome, a facility designed to support athletes of all ages and skill levels throughout the year. The City describes the opportunity as offering long-term recognition, community engagement, and a chance for a brand to become part of a lasting local legacy. The dome is being built between the Trader Ridge and Whispering Ridge neighbourhoods, and the City is accepting expressions of interest until Friday, October 10th. More information is available on the City’s website.
