Grande Prairie Minute - Your weekly one-minute summary of Grande Prairie politics

📅 This Week In Grande Prairie: 📅

  • The Alberta Next Panel drew a crowd of more than 500 in Grande Prairie, where residents voiced strong support for proposals to reduce federal influence over provincial affairs. The panel is tasked with identifying six ideas that could become referendum questions, including withdrawing from the Canada Pension Plan, establishing a provincial police force, collecting Alberta’s own taxes, and limiting access to social services for some immigrants. Premier Danielle Smith suggested some measures may proceed without referendums, promising quick action once the panel submits its report later this year. Smith has already directed her jobs minister to seek greater immigration control and announced plans to add citizenship markers to provincial IDs. The final in-person town hall will be held in Calgary later this month.

  • Charlene Nelson is one of seven candidates running for mayor of Grande Prairie in the October 20th election. She is motivated by a long-term commitment to the community, having lived here for 18 years, and wants to focus on action, integrity, and bringing people together. Nelson highlights her professional experience in leadership, budgeting, and community engagement as key skills that prepare her for the role. Her priorities include infrastructure and city growth, economic development, community engagement and transparency, public safety, and mental health support. She emphasizes the importance of listening to residents and making decisions that put community needs first.

  • Dylan Bressey is running for re-election as a City Councillor. He and his family fell in love with the city and want to help create opportunities for future generations, building on what Council has already achieved. Bressey brings a mix of private, public, and non-profit experience, including eight years on City Council, service on the Alberta Municipalities Board, running small businesses, and leading community programs like youth resiliency initiatives and the Grande Prairie Disc Golf Club. He emphasizes collaboration, public engagement, and fact-based discussion as core strengths. His priorities include transparency, focusing on essential city services, affordability, community development, and safety. Bressey describes his platform as a practical to-do list for the term rather than just a campaign tool.

  • The Grande Prairie Downtown Association has partnered with the Grande Prairie Storm for the 2025-2026 AJHL season, celebrating each home game by lighting the City Centre Downtown Entrance sign in the team’s colours. The partnership highlights the Storm’s economic and community contributions. Bobbi Jo Matheson, Chair of the Downtown Association, emphasized the benefits to local businesses and the community, while Storm Executive Director Nicole Menzies expressed gratitude for the support and the downtown location of their home rink, Bonnetts Energy Centre. The Storm’s first game of the season took place on Friday.

  • The Stitch Club of Grande Prairie has set a new record with its annual winter donation drive, contributing 7,086 knitted items - including sweaters and blankets - to over 40 local organizations. This achievement was made possible by 67 members who dedicated more than 28,000 hours, up from 58 members last year. The club has seen an influx of younger members, including seven Mother-Daughter and Grandmother-Granddaughter pairs, who contribute as “satellite knitters” on their own time. Over 11,500 balls of yarn were used this year, prompting a call for donations of fabric, yarn, bottles, or cash to support next year’s efforts. The Stitch Club is now a registered charity, allowing it to issue tax receipts, and continues to collaborate with local community centres for drop-offs. Recipients include organizations ranging from hospitals and shelters to food banks and youth services across the Peace Region.
