Construction has begun on the Ken Sargent House in Grande Prairie, a new 21-suite facility designed to provide affordable, home-like accommodations for patients and families travelling for medical care. Located near the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital, it will support those undergoing treatment like chemotherapy or surgery, as well as their support networks. The project is named for local philanthropist Ken Sargent, who donated $2 million toward the facility’s long-term operations. Organizers aim to raise $12 million to complete construction and establish an endowment fund. The facility will include private suites, shared kitchen and living areas, and laundry services. The goal is to ease financial and emotional strain on rural and remote families during health crises. Construction is expected to finish by late fall 2026. Fundraising is ongoing, with roughly $7 million still needed.

The event will be headlined by Alberta-born, double-platinum country artist Aaron Goodvin, who is known for hits like Lonely Drum and was honored as the 2018 CCMA Songwriter of the Year. Live music begins at 3:30 pm with performances by TJ Ruckus, Hey Driver, Brad Sims, and Goodvin himself. The festivities also include a Canada Day parade, free swimming at the Aquatera Outdoor Pool, carnival rides, food trucks, beer gardens, and a kids zone with face painting and entertainment. Mayor Jackie Clayton expressed excitement about hosting a local star, highlighting the event as a celebration of both community and national pride. Full details and times can be found on the City’s website.
- Grande Prairie’s fire ban was downgraded to a fire restriction as of Wednesday afternoon, and backyard fires are now allowed under certain conditions. Fire Marshal Chris Renyk noted that while the situation has improved, the area remains very dry with an elevated wildfire risk. Residents are urged to be vigilant about fire hazards around their homes, especially smokers, as many fires start from discarded cigarette materials. Under the new restriction, propane and natural gas barbecues, firepits with spark arrestors or screens, and indoor wood fireplaces are permitted. The fire restriction will stay in place until weather conditions improve further to ensure community safety.
