Grande Prairie Minute: Issue 58

Grande Prairie Minute - Your weekly one-minute summary of Grande Prairie politics

📅 This Week In Grande Prairie: 📅

  • On Monday, at 2:30 pm, there will be an in-camera (secret) meeting of City Council. There is very little indication as to what will be discussed at the meeting. A short while later, at 3:00 pm, there will be a public City Council meeting. Council will hear from two residents, one of whom will request that the City introduce a declining property tax exemption for large-scale multi-family rental developments, aimed at mitigating risks associated with these projects in the face of global economic challenges. The second resident will ask that Council reconsider the City of Grande Prairie’s participation and membership with the Federation of Canadian Municipalities.

  • Grande Prairie is cracking down on noisy vehicles as complaints rise with warmer weather. Concerns about loud traffic, particularly on the city’s southeast side, prompted action following a public delegation last year. The noise is primarily caused by vehicles with modified exhausts or inadequate mufflers, as well as behaviours like stunting and over-acceleration. In 2024, 160 tickets were issued for noise violations, and officers have since undergone technical training to better identify and address these issues. Enforcement will now focus on both education and ticketing, with fines of $162 and possible court appearances for offenders.

  • GP911 services in Northern Alberta experienced a major outage on April 28th, leaving many communities temporarily unable to access 9-1-1. During the disruption, residents were instructed to report emergencies in person or via non-emergency phone lines. Although the system is built with backups to prevent such failures, officials confirmed the outage was beyond their control. GP911 has requested an independent review to ensure transparency and accountability. Services have since been fully restored. Meanwhile, the Grande Prairie Health Clinic was also temporarily closed due to indoor air quality issues.

  • The City of Grande Prairie has issued a fire restriction effective immediately due to very dry conditions. The restriction bans outdoor fires that are not contained in approved fire pits, as well as backcountry wood campfires, fireworks, and exploding targets. Fire Marshal Chris Renyk says the goal is to prevent human-caused wildfires while firefighting resources are limited. Safe use of propane and gas appliances, barbecues, and approved fire pits is still allowed. The restriction will remain in place until conditions improve.

  • Conservative MP Chris Warkentin secured his seventh consecutive win in the Grande Prairie riding, capturing over 80% of the vote in the federal election. He expressed gratitude to Peace Region residents and reaffirmed his commitment to defending local economic interests, particularly against federal policies he says harm key industries. Warkentin noted a surge in Conservative support nationwide and a significant decline in votes for the NDP and Bloc Québécois. He suggested the current minority government may be unstable and predicted a potential return to the polls within months. Three more Conservatives were elected in surrounding districts - newcomer William Stevenson in Yellowhead, Arnold Viersen for a fourth term in Peace River-Westlock, and Bob Zimmer in Prince George-Peace River-Northern Rockies, across the border in BC.
