• Grande Prairie's curbside recycling program will expand on October 1st, when Alberta's Extended Producer Responsibility program takes over the funding and management of residential packaging and paper recycling. Under the change, the full cost of curbside recycling shifts to the companies that produce and supply those products, through a national not-for-profit called Circular Materials, rather than being arranged by the City. Residents will be able to recycle a broader range of materials, and the program will stay bag-based, with Prairie Disposal continuing weekly collection and Aquatera managing local depots. The City opted into the first phase of the program in 2025. Mayor Jackie Clayton says standardizing accepted materials across the province will make recycling easier and keep more material out of the landfill. Garbage collection is not affected, and regular garbage fees remain in place.
  
  
• City crews are approaching two weeks of cleanup work on a petroleum hydrocarbon release in the Bear River, which a resident first reported on July 24th. Crews responded alongside the fire department and a hazardous materials team, and a preliminary analysis indicated the substance was weathered diesel or hydraulic oil. The exact source and volume of the release remain unknown. Remediation is continuing in the affected stretch between Maskwoteh Park and the Museum. The City notes that most stormwater in Grande Prairie flows untreated into storm ponds and local waterways, meaning material poured into catch basins and roadside drains can quickly reach the river. Officials say there is no immediate risk to the public but are asking residents to stay out of the water and avoid the area until laboratory results are returned and containment booms are removed.
  
  
• Invest Northwest Alberta, the regional economic development partnership between the City of Grande Prairie, the County of Grande Prairie and the Municipal District of Greenview, has named former Alberta Finance Minister Travis Toews as its first independent chair. Toews served as the province's Minister of Finance and President of Treasury Board from 2019 to 2023 and has held leadership roles across the energy, agriculture and financial sectors, including as president of the Canadian Cattle Association. Mayor Jackie Clayton says appointing an independent chair strengthens the partnership by bringing experienced leadership focused on shared regional priorities. The partnership, which represents a region of more than 300,000 people, says it aims to attract investment by pursuing opportunities as one regional team rather than competing across municipal boundaries. Toews described the region as having the natural resources and skilled workforce to compete nationally and globally.
  
  
• The City of Grande Prairie is asking residents and businesses for feedback on a long-term design to twin sections of 132 Avenue and 116 Street, two corridors that connect the city's north and south ends to Highways 43 and 40. The project is in the planning stage, and the City says construction is not anticipated at this time and could occur anytime over the next 5 to 20 years depending on growth and future priorities. Feedback is being sought on local considerations such as access, safety and property impacts. Mayor Jackie Clayton says planning the transportation network well in advance helps the city prepare as Grande Prairie grows. The engagement is open online through the City's engagement portal.
