• No City Council or committee meetings are scheduled in Grande Prairie this week. The next scheduled meeting is a City Council session on Monday, August 17th, at 6:00 pm.
  
  
• Most City of Grande Prairie facilities will be closed today, in observance of Heritage Day, including City Hall, the Eastlink Centre, the Bonnetts Energy Centre, the Montrose Cultural Centre, and several other civic buildings. A few amenities, such as the Ernie Radbourne Pavilion and the Aquatera Outdoor Pool, will remain open from 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Transit service will continue to operate on a holiday schedule, with regular routes running from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm and late-night on-demand service available until 8:00 pm. 
  
  
• The 2026 National Disc Golf Championship brought close to 600 players and spectators to Grande Prairie from Friday, July 24th to Sunday, July 26th. Councillor Dylan Bressey, who chaired the local organizing committee, says participants repeatedly told organizers it was the best nationals they had ever attended, with high praise for the city's courses, restaurants, parks, and pools. The competition featured a couple dozen award categories, with roughly 150 people watching the final round of the men's and women's Pro Open divisions on the Sunday. Thomas Gilbert won the men's title and Sofia Donnecke won the women's. Professional film coverage of the event is expected to be released in the coming weeks.
  
  
• The Grande Prairie Public Library is planning to launch a self-serve 'Pocket Library' branch inside the Eastlink Centre, at an estimated capital cost of $130,000. Residents would be able to browse the collection, pick up holds, and attend pop-up library programs, following a model already in place in communities across Alberta. The library is seeking sponsors to help fund the launch, including a single founding naming-rights sponsor, with smaller opportunities and in-kind contributions also welcome. Library Director Hailey McCullough says Grande Prairie is growing rapidly and core community services like the library need to grow with it.
  
  
• Experience Grande Prairie returns for its fifth year on Friday, August 28th, running from 4:00 pm to 11:00 pm on the outdoor grounds of Bonnetts Energy Centre. The free, family-friendly event will feature live music, local food, and community activities. Canadian rock band Trooper will headline, closing out the evening alongside a lineup of local and regional performers. Inside The Bowes, local organizations will run interactive community booths, with children's activities and games for families, while food vendors will serve throughout the evening at H.A. Rice Plaza. Mayor Jackie Clayton says events like Experience Grande Prairie make the community stronger by bringing people together.
