📅 This Week In Grande Prairie: 📅
-
There are no Council or Committee meetings this week as there is a recess until April 17th. Standing Committee Day will return on Tuesday, April 21st.
- Residents in Grande Prairie’s Pinnacle Ridge neighbourhood are being asked for feedback on a proposed $12.50 annual levy to fund the operation and maintenance of the community’s entrance water feature and fountain. The levy, which has been in place since 2010 at the request of the neighbourhood association, must be approved annually by City Council under the Alberta Municipal Government Act. The funding helps cover seasonal operation of the fountain, which typically runs from mid to late May depending on weather conditions. The issue will be reviewed at an Operational Services Committee meeting on May 5th, 2026, followed by a City Council meeting on May 11th, 2026. Residents can provide input through written submissions, delegate presentations, or by contacting City staff directly ahead of the meetings.

The Maskwa Medical Centre Board of Directors has issued a public statement aimed at clarifying what they say are misconceptions about its planned facility in Grande Prairie and its funding model. The Board emphasized that the project is a non-profit initiative and will not charge patient user fees or operate as a private clinic, despite concerns raised during public discussion. Instead of requesting municipal cash contributions or loans, the project is seeking municipal guarantees to help secure a construction loan, with each participating municipality covering a proportional share that would decline over time as additional funding is secured. The facility, expected to open in 2027, is planned to be financially self-sustaining through clinical and commercial lease revenue once operational. It will be located next to the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital and is intended to improve access to specialist care, reduce emergency department pressure, and expand physician training opportunities. Supporters argue the project will reduce significant out-of-pocket travel costs currently borne by patients travelling to Edmonton for care, while improving overall healthcare access in the region.

The City of Grande Prairie is accepting applications for public members to serve on its Police Commission, an independent oversight body responsible for ensuring ethical and accountable policing within the Grande Prairie Police Service. Successful applicants will be appointed to two- or three-year terms, with the possibility of renewal up to a maximum of 10 years, and the Commission will play a growing role as the City moves toward the Grande Prairie Police Service becoming the primary police of jurisdiction. Officials say they are seeking individuals with experience in governance, finance, law, public accountability, and work with Indigenous communities, along with strong understanding of diversity and inclusion in policing contexts. Applicants must be at least 18 years old and pass an enhanced security clearance and criminal record check, though residency in Grande Prairie is not required. Applications are being accepted online and reviewed on an ongoing basis.
- The STARS Critical Care On The Air radiothon raised more than $475,000 over a two-day fundraising campaign broadcast across over 90 radio stations in western Canada. The annual event featured stories from former patients, known as VIPs, along with STARS air ambulance medical crews and pilots, highlighting the impact of emergency air medical services. Organizers said the fundraiser underscores strong community support for STARS and its role in providing rapid critical care access when time is critical. Donors shared personal accounts of how STARS transport helped save lives and reconnect families during major medical emergencies. STARS leadership described the event as a community-driven effort that directly supports life-saving operations across the region. The radiothon is expected to return again in 2027.
