📅 This Week In Grande Prairie: 📅

  • The Grande Prairie Public School Division has identified a new Kindergarten to Grade 8 school in Kensington as its top capital priority, aiming for a September 2029 opening with capacity for 750 students at an estimated cost of $30 million. Other priorities include a 200-student addition to Charles Spencer High School, expected to open in September 2028 for $6.3 million, and a replacement for Crystal Park School, planned for 2031 with room for 680 students at $37.7 million. The division is also selecting an architect for a three-storey expansion at the Composite High School, which would accommodate 450 additional students, with construction expected to start in 2027.

  • The City of Grande Prairie held its 2026 State of the City event on March 31st at Bonnetts Energy Centre, featuring a panel moderated by Mayor Jackie Clayton that included representatives from the police, education, industry, and business sectors. Discussions highlighted the upcoming switchover between the Grande Prairie Police Service and the RCMP, the region’s housing boom driven by population growth, and opportunities in AI, hydrogen, advanced manufacturing, and energy transition projects. Panelists also addressed local skills gaps, noting successes in healthcare and education programs at Northwestern Polytechnic. Mayor Clayton emphasized aligning education and industry, improving permitting efficiency, and fostering collaboration for sustainable growth. County and municipal leaders also shared brief updates on 2025 in their communities.

  • The City is ending its residential snow-clearing rotation and shifting focus to managing snowmelt and removing snow to improve drainage in the community. Temporary parking restrictions tied to the snow-clearing program will also end, though windrow removal on priority routes will continue and parking bans on those routes remain in effect. The change is intended to make more effective use of equipment and resources as spring conditions take hold, and residents with questions can contact Access GP at 311.

  • The Grande Prairie Rural RCMP Detachment has been renamed the Clairmont RCMP Detachment, effective immediately. While the City of Grande Prairie transitions to its own police service, the RCMP will continue serving Clairmont, Sexsmith, Grovedale, Bezanson, Teepee Creek, Debolt, Crooked Creek, much of Grande Prairie County, and a small area of the MD of Greenview. Detachment boundaries and phone numbers remain the same, and the detachment building continues to operate at Suite 101, 10605 West Side Drive in Grande Prairie.

  • Grande Prairie has opened Canada’s northernmost anatomy lab, a joint initiative between the University of Alberta and Northwestern Polytechnic, aimed at expanding access to advanced medical education in northern communities. The lab features a Virtual Anatomy Table, funded by the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital Foundation, which allows students to study the human body interactively and observe how organs and systems function together. It will serve students in the Northern Alberta Medical Program as well as health-related programs at Northwestern Polytechnic, including nursing, paramedicine, and kinesiology. The lab provides northern students with the same opportunities for hands-on anatomical learning as those in larger urban centres, reducing the need to travel for advanced training.
