📅 This Week In Grande Prairie: 📅

  • Today, at 3:00 pm, there will be a City Council meeting. On the agenda is the City’s 2026-2029 Strategic Plan. The plan provides a framework to guide Council and Administration over the next four years. Developed following a facilitated session in January 2026, the plan defines the City’s vision as a thriving, resilient, and innovative community, supported by values of collaboration, resourcefulness, respect, and evidence-informed decision-making. It is organized around four strategic pillars: economic opportunity and resilience, community empowerment and livability, infrastructure and financial responsibility, and purposeful leadership and governance, each with defined areas of focus such as investment readiness, community safety, and credible communication. The plan will guide budgeting, departmental business planning, Council decision-making, and advocacy efforts,.

  • A delegation from the Wapiti Community Support Association will speak to Council to raise concerns about a $1.45-million provincial funding cut, which represents roughly one-third of the organization’s shelter funding. They highlight that the reduction would severely impact Grande Prairie’s homelessness response system by eliminating key housing supports, reducing shelter capacity, and increasing strain on emergency services and community safety. WCSA is asking Council to advocate to the Province of Alberta to pause the funding cuts until replacement supports are in place, with the desired outcome being formal Council support for the organization's advocacy efforts.

  • Council will also discuss two borrowing bylaws. The first would authorize the borrowing of $7,610,000 to fund the construction of a Public Safety Communications Centre, part of a total estimated project cost of $8,460,000. The second would authorize the borrowing of $5,000,000 to fund repairs and upgrades to the Mission Heights stormwater infrastructure.

  • A recall petition targeting Grande Prairie-Wapiti MLA Ron Wiebe has been declared unsuccessful by Elections Alberta. The petition was prompted by concerns over Wiebe’s support for bills using the notwithstanding clause, which the petitioner argued undermined people’s rights and dignity. To succeed, 11,921 signatures were required, but only 279 were submitted before the March 23rd, 2026, deadline, falling far short of the threshold.

  • The City of Grande Prairie has announced the speaker and panelist lineup for its State of the City event, scheduled for Tuesday, March 31st, at the Bonnets Energy Centre. Mayor Jackie Clayton will moderate a panel focused on regional trends, challenges, and opportunities. The panel features Police Chief Dwayne Lakusta, Northwestern Polytechnic President Dr. Vanessa Sheane, BILD Alberta CEO Scott Fash, and Alberta Chamber of Commerce Vice Chair Cindy Park. According to Mayor Clayton, the event is designed to bring together cross-sector perspectives to provide a clearer picture of the community's future direction. In addition to the main panel, the Municipal District of Greenview Reeve Ryan Ratzlaff and County of Grande Prairie Deputy Reeve Bob Chrenek will discuss key local initiatives, including Wonder Valley. The event will run from 11:00 am to 1:30 pm.
