Today, at 3:00 pm, there will be a meeting of City Council. Mayor Jackie Clayton will proclaim March 21st, 2026 as the “International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination” in alignment with the United Nations’ designation of this day. The proclamation also highlights the City’s commitment to acknowledging the traditional territory of Treaty 8 and honouring the diverse First Nations and Métis peoples whose ancestors lived on the land.
- APPLE Schools will appear as a delegation before Council. The organization partners with local school communities to embed healthy eating, physical activity, and positive mental health into the school day, creating long-term culture change. In Grande Prairie, the program supports four schools - Alexander Forbes, Avondale, Crystal Park, and Roy Bickell - ensuring children, regardless of background, have access to healthier choices. The delegation will present research that shows APPLE Schools increases physical activity by 35%, fruit and vegetable consumption by 40%, and reduces the likelihood of childhood obesity by 40%, while improving overall wellbeing and school engagement. APPLE schools says families report positive changes, such as children trying new foods and drinking more water. The program’s goal in Grande Prairie is to sustain these benefits for students long-term while fostering stronger school communities and healthier children.

Also on the Council agenda is a report entitled “2025 Municipal Election - Non-Compliance with Campaign Disclosure Statements.” The City of Grande Prairie’s Legislative and Executive Services has reported that one candidate failed to file the required Campaign Disclosure Statement for the 2025 municipal election by the March 2nd, 2026, deadline. Under the Local Authorities Election Act, this non-compliance triggers immediate consequences, including a $500 late filing fee and ineligibility to run in future elections for up to eight years, or three years if the required documents are later submitted. Notices and reminders were issued to all candidates prior to the deadline, and a formal Notice of Default was sent on March 3rd, 2026. The City will publish the report on its website, and the candidate has 60 days to seek judicial relief if desired.

Administration is recommending that Council approve 2026 Large Scale Tourism Grant allocations totalling $100,000 for three local events. The funding would provide $25,000 to GrandeCon, $35,000 to the Grande Prairie Traditional Pow Wow, and $40,000 to the Grande Prairie Regional Air Show. All three events met the eligibility criteria, which aims to grow tourism, volunteerism, and cultural celebration in the community. The allocations were determined based on each event’s financial sustainability, reliance on municipal funding, and projected economic and social impact. GrandeCon receives a smaller portion due to its strong historical profitability, while the Pow Wow receives a larger allocation to support cultural and community outcomes.
- The City of Grande Prairie is offering free transit services on Wednesday, March 18th, 2026, in observance of Transit Operator and Worker Appreciation Day. This initiative aims to recognize the role of transit staff in maintaining community connectivity and to encourage residents to explore local routes or try the service for the first time. Mayor Jackie Clayton stated that the day provides an opportunity for the public to thank transit workers who help residents stay connected to important locations in their lives.
