Grande Prairie Minute - Your weekly one-minute summary of Grande Prairie politics

This Week In Grande Prairie:

  • Standing Committee Day, originally scheduled for Tuesday, is cancelled. The cancellations impact meetings of the Financial and Administrative Services Committee, Public and Protective Services Committee, Operational Services Committee, and Investment and Strategy Committee.

  • The City’s 2024 Annual Report is now available. The report details some key accomplishments and infrastructure improvements, among other items. According to the report, last year, the City completed 41.35 km of road rehabilitation, inspected 185 km of pavement, and repaired over 6,400 metres of sidewalks. In sports tourism, the Alberta Winter Games brought 6,000 visitors and generated a $4.6 million economic impact, while the National Aboriginal Hockey Championships contributed $2 million to the region. Another milestone included the swearing-in of the first Chief of the Grande Prairie Police Service. You can download the full report on the City’s website.

  • The Grande Prairie Regional Emergency Partnership (GPREP) now has dedicated social media accounts to improve communication during emergencies. Residents can follow “gprepalerts” on Facebook and X for official updates, replacing the previous system where municipalities shared GPREP-provided information on their own pages. Mayor Jackie Clayton says the new accounts will help deliver critical updates more quickly. GPREP, which includes the City and County of Grande Prairie, Beaverlodge, Sexsmith, and Wembley, coordinates regional emergency response efforts.

The AFPA is also pushing for federal financial assistance, citing $10 billion in duty deposits held by the US Treasury since 2016.

They also allocated nearly $4 million from reserves to cover retroactive RCMP salary increases from 2017 to 2022. A tax incentive program was introduced for new residential buildings with 30 or more units, offering full and partial tax breaks over four years. Council’s next meeting is scheduled for April 7th.

  • Premier Danielle Smith has appointed three new parliamentary secretaries, including two from Peace Country. Grande Prairie MLA Nolan Dyck was named Parliamentary Secretary for Indigenous and Rural Policing, where he will work to enhance safety in rural and Indigenous communities. Grande Prairie-Wapiti MLA Ron Wiebe was appointed Parliamentary Secretary for Rural Health in the North Zone, partnering with MLA Justin Wright, who will oversee the South Zone.
