Last Week In Grande Prairie:

  • Following a recent visit from Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland to the Grande Prairie area, local MP Chris Warkentin expressed concerns about the Liberal government's disconnect from western Canada. He highlighted that residents in Grande Prairie share common challenges with Canadians nationwide, particularly regarding the financial strain caused by the federal carbon price. Warkentin criticized Freeland's optimistic statements about carbon capture projects, arguing that the current administration has driven investment away from Canada due to excessive regulations and taxes. He asserted that many Canadians feel alienated from Ottawa, as decision-makers seem unaware of their everyday struggles.

  • The City announced that its Engage Grande Prairie event is set to return to the Eastlink Centre for its second year. This event allows residents to learn about and provide feedback on key municipal topics, including the 2025 Budget, Bear Creek Dam, Cedar Point, Fire Services, GPPS, Parks, and Transit Services. Mayor Jackie Clayton believes that the event fosters connections between the City and its residents, enabling direct engagement with City officials on issues that matter to the community. Residents can participate in online feedback opportunities regarding the 2025 Municipal Budget until October 6th. The main event will take place on October 3rd from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm and is free for all attendees.

  • The City and County of Grande Prairie announced that they are inviting residents to a public open house on October 7th to review the finalized Intermunicipal Development Plan (IDP). This long-term strategic plan, mandated by the Municipal Government Act, aims to provide a cohesive framework for development and infrastructure near municipal boundaries. Following community engagement sessions over the summer, feedback gathered during previous open houses has led to significant revisions in the draft IDP. The open house will take place from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Teresa Sargent Hall in the Montrose Cultural Centre.
