Grande Prairie Minute - Your weekly one-minute summary of Grande Prairie politics

This Week In Grande Prairie:

  • Tuesday is Committee Day. Meetings begin at 9:00 am with the Public and Protective Services Committee. On the agenda is an update on FireSmart Initiatives as well as an annual report from the South Peace Regional Archives, among other items. The Financial and Administrative Services Committee meets at 10:00 am, though much of the agenda will be held in-camera (in secret). At 10:10 am, there will be a meeting of the Strategy and Communication Services Committee. The lone agenda item is a Service Area Report.

  • The Invest GP Committee will meet at 10:20 am. The Committee will discuss proposing an amendment to the Land Use Bylaw to emphasize a preference for camouflage design techniques for telecommunication towers and to improve public notification requirements regarding the placement of those towers. Finally, there will be a meeting of the Operational Services Committee at 10:40 am. The Committee will put forward some recommendations and criteria regarding decommissioning of playgrounds.

  • The City is accepting applications to be part of the annual Canada Day festivities. Organizations and residents can apply for float space in the parade (and make your own float!). There are some hoops to jump through before you can take to the streets however, so if you’re interested, see the City’s application form here. The theme of this year’s parade is “Coast to Coast”.

Last Week In Grande Prairie:

  • City Council, after a lengthy discussion, approved a site north of the pickleball courts near Legion Field for a potential new sports and recreation facility, with the alternative being a location south of the courts, where a ball diamond currently exists. Council instructed Administration to engage in discussions regarding the proposal with the school division that owns the land, and to prepare a report on the feasibility of constructing either a dome or a fabric and steel building spanning 135,000 square feet. Council also approved a motion for City staff to assess the potential costs of services such as water and parking for this project.

  • Grande Prairie has implemented a fire ban due to dry weather and heightened fire risk. This ban includes the suspension of all fire permits and the requirement to extinguish existing fires. Only certain outdoor fires using natural gas, propane, or electric equipment are allowed, while burning barrels, wood fires in campgrounds, and activities like exploding targets and fireworks are prohibited. Meanwhile, evacuation orders were issued for some areas of Grande Prairie County due to wildfires.

  • The City of Grande Prairie announced that it is commissioning an artist to create a monument commemorating the 125th anniversary of the Treaty Eight signing. Mayor Jackie Clayton said the monument will honour the City's past, present, and future relationship with First Nations on the land. Artists should submit expressions of interest showcasing their experience in Indigenous-themed public art, with up to three concept sketches and photos of past work, and must consider key themes like historical significance, community unity, and environmental resilience. Submissions will be evaluated based on relevance to Treaty Eight, sculptural skill, cultural sensitivity, feasibility, and ties to Treaty Eight territory, with a deadline of May 29th for submissions on the City’s website.
