This Week In Grande Prairie:

  • There will be an in-camera meeting of City Council this afternoon at 2:30 pm. No substantive information is available about the nature of the single agenda item. Afterwards, at 3:00 pm, there will be a public meeting of City Council. The agenda includes a verbal Emergency Management update. Council will also accept the Alberta Winter Games Legacy Funding in the amount of $220,000 and allocate this funding to the Climbing Wall Project at the Activity and Reception Centre. There will also be a Public Hearing, near the end of the meeting, to address two land use amendment proposals.

  • Tree replacement work along 100 Avenue is ongoing for a few more days. Contractors will replace unhealthy trees at 102 Street as part of the Downtown Rehabilitation and Streetscapes Project. The work, which will progress eastward towards 98 Street, will also include updates to planter beds on 100 Avenue. While minimal traffic interruptions are anticipated, drivers should adhere to posted signage in the work zones.

  • The annual Bridge Repair and Maintenance Program is underway. The project will involve short-term lane closures on several vehicle bridges, with traffic speeds reduced to 30 km/h near bridge culverts while workers are present. Pedestrian bridges will face varying access restrictions, with some potentially closed entirely during repairs. The program aims to enhance the safety and durability of the City’s bridges, with repairs planned for five vehicle bridges, two bridge culverts, three pedestrian bridges, and the Kayak Launch. The pedestrian bridge near 79th Avenue will be the first to undergo repairs, with further updates to follow.

Firefighters and emergency response vehicles were deployed to Jasper as well. Thanks for stepping up Grande Prairie!

  • The City has encouraged residents to read up on Lending Bylaw C-1476, which authorizes a $3.5 million loan to the Maskwa Medical Centre. The bylaw, which passed its first reading earlier in July, must be advertised for two weeks to allow residents to petition for a vote. If no petition is received within 15 days of the final advertisement, the bylaw will proceed to second and third readings. The bylaw is also under review by the County of Grande Prairie and the MD of Greenview. The funds will be provided as a three-year loan, and residents can express their views on the bylaw at the Council meeting on August 26th by submitting a delegation request form.

  • The provincial government has initiated a planning study for expanding the Grande Prairie courthouse. According to Alberta Infrastructure, this study will address current space and program issues within the facility. The results are expected to provide solutions to improve the building's functionality. Alberta Infrastructure aims to complete the study by this fall.
